Natural rubber mattresses

Natural rubber mattresses

For the rubber mattress cores from PROLANA, cleaned and concentrated natural rubber is transformed into a kind of 'cream' and poured into moulds. The subsequent vulcanization process gives natural rubber its extraordinary flexibility and point elasticity. PROLANA mattresses are regularly checked for quality in accordance with the QUL standards. Residue analyses guarantee that the natural rubber is free from harmful substances. And you also make a contribution towards environmental protection while you sleep: rubber trees absorb more CO2 than all other plants, even tropical rainforests cannot compete with rubber growing areas in this regard. PROLANA only uses certified and fair trade rubber (Fair Rubber e.V.).
Natural rubber mattresses are extremely flexible and point elastic - the ideal combination for your back when you prefer to sleep on your side.

Choosing the right mattress

Choosing the right mattress is an important prerequisite for healthy sleep. While you sleep, the intervertebral discs and muscles recover from the strenuous day. A few rules to help you find the right mattress:

Back sleepers are better off on a somewhat harder, point / area-elastic mattress. PROLANA mattresses are available in all degrees of hardness. Cores with one or more layers of latexed coconut make the mattress firmer, but it remains elastic.

Side sleepers usually prefer softer, point-elastic mattresses. Pure natural rubber cores are the right choice here.

The heavier you are, the firmer the mattress should be. Very heavy people should also choose a higher mattress.

On a zone mattress, the spine is orthopedically correct in both positions, straight in the side position and S-shaped in the supine position. This relieves the load on the intervertebral discs and back muscles and improves blood circulation. To ensure this, the finely tuned zones ensure that your body can optimally sink into the rubber core. Integrated transverse channels in the shoulder area facilitate deeper immersion. This is why zone mattresses are recommended if you frequently change your sleeping position.

If you and your partner have different requirements for lying down, but don't want to have a 'visitor gap', we offer the perfect solution for you: The PROLANA partner choice mattresses, two different cores in one shell. Your advantage is obvious: you and your partner have the mattress that suits you and on which you are anatomically correct and comfortable - and no visitor gap.

‘Latex is ahead’

Latexgewinnung am Kautschukbaum

With this headline, the Süddeutsche Zeitung (edition 28.8.2014) summarised a broad-based report of the results of the Stiftung Warentest. 'The Stiftung Warentest has chosen the latex mattresses as the test winner,' writes the Süddeutsche. 'They only have a market share of less than one percent. But latex mattresses performed best in the test. Good mattresses made of this material last a long time and would fit all body sizes and shapes, regardless of the sleeping position, according to the foundation.’ (
Stiftung Warentest provides information on the advantages and disadvantages of different types of mattresses on a separate page. (

The mattress experts name the advantages of latex mattresses:

  • Good thermal insulation, recommended for anyone who feels the cold.
  • Good durability, as sweat and heat do not affect latex.
  • Ideally suited for adjustable slatted frames.
  • Comfortable lying feeling, soft and supportive at the same time.

Stiftung Warentest cites the following disadvantages:

  • Moderate moisture transport, therefore less suitable for people who sweat.

  • Heavy and wobbly, makes rotating and turning difficult.

We at PROLANA have been thinking about both of these for a long time and have taken action to address the issues. PROLANA only works with pure natural rubber and it really has its weight. For this reason, we have provided the cover of the PROLANA mattresses with handy, stable handles, so that two people can easily turn and transport the mattress.

And people who sweat a lot do not have to do without the comfort and positive properties that only a latex mattress offers. A PROLANA mattress consists of a latex core, a coating and a cover. For the coating, you can choose between certified organic cotton fleece or pure new wool fleece. Cotton is breathable and can absorb almost a quarter of its own weight in moisture without feeling clammy. Pure new wool warms well, regulates moisture and ensures a pleasant, dry sleeping environment.

You can also get the PROLANA Samar mattresses (SAMAR Comfort, Premium, Comfort Plus and Premium Plus) with a cover made from certified organic cotton ticking. It is provided with a zipper, so it can be removed and washed in a few simple steps.

And maybe you will also opt for a PROLANA base bed. It improves the sleeping climate and the moisture balance. PROLANA offers a range of different mattresses that use and combine the different properties of materials such as cotton, pure new wool or camel hair. The Firenze underbed is made entirely of cotton and can be washed in the washing machine.

And we would like to comment on one last statement made by the mattress experts at Stiftung Warentest.

'Latex mattresses are mostly made of synthetic latex. They seldom contain natural rubber,' they say, explaining the different types of mattresses.

PROLANA latex mattresses are made exclusively from natural latex- we never use synthetic latex. Why is this difference important?

With a mattress made of natural rubber, you are making an active contribution to environmental protection. Synthetic latex is made from petroleum, a fossil fuel that releases CO2. And at the end of its life, a mattress made of synthetic latex is hazardous waste, it has to be burned or it ends up in a landfill.

Mattresses made of natural latex, on the other hand, are made from the sap of rubber trees and are biodegradable. And when it comes to CO2, rubber trees are top notch, as they absorb more than even tropical rainforests. A PROLANA natural latex mattress - that means protecting the environment while you sleep.
